Taxi Strike

If you're looking for a taxi in Peace River you might have some trouble. Taxi's are on strike today, protesting council's decision to look at making cabs get licenses and follow some new standards. If you call a cab, nobody's answering... you'll only hear messages asking you to support them in stopping that bylaw. Council passed first reading of the bylaw on Monday.  It still needs two more readings to fully pass.

Murder Charge

Police say it's definitely a murder case. Autopsy results are in, saying an 85-year-old man from Acheson, Alberta died from a beating last Friday. 38-year-old Kevin Michalchuck from Peace River is charged with murder in that man's death.  He's in court today.

Alberta Energy

Alberta announces Changes to Energy Royalties tomorrow. Wildrose Alliance Leader Danielle Smith says so far royalty changes have been an expensive disaster, and they're drying up energy investment. Energy Minister Ron Liepert releases Alberta's Energy Industry Competitiveness review in Calgary tomorrow.

Jaffer Decision

Opposition MP's say the Federal Conservatives are a bunch of hypocrites. That's after former Tory MP Rahim Jaffer avoided cocaine and drunk driving charges yesterday, when he made a deal to plead guilty to careless driving. The opposition says the Tory's boast about being tough-on-crime, but clearly they're not walking the walk.

NPHL HOCKEY

The Falher Pirates and Lakeland Eagles are going to need a game 7.  Lakeland had the chance to finish them off in Falher last night and it looked like it was going to need Overtime to solve.  But then Falher's Brennan Francon netted the winner with 3 minutes to go to hand the Pirates a 5-4 win and tie the series up 3.  All the marbles are up for grabs in game 7 Friday in McLennan.

AJHL HOCKEY

The Grande Prairie Storm avoided a big hole.  They edged Fort McMurray 4-2 last night at home to tie the series up at 1 apiece thanks in no small part to Peace River's Darren Kramer.
He scored 2 power-play goals including the winner.  Series now moves to Fort Mac for Game 3 Thursday.

NHL HOCKEY

3 wins in a row just would have been a little too much to ask for.  The Oilers winning streak ended at 2 last night when Ottawa took it to them 4-1.

In other action around the league, Jarome Iginla and Rene Bourque scored a few minutes apart in the 3rd minute to power Calgary to a 4-2 win over Detroit. Mikael Samuelsson gave Vancouver some breathing room at the top of the Northwest Division with a 6-4 win over 2nd place Colorado.  Samuelsson has his first career hat-trick for the Canucks. Montreal won their 3rd straight 5-3 over Tampa Bay, and Nikolai Kulemin scored in OT and Toronto topped Boston 4-3.

ARCTIC WINTER GAMES

Team Alberta North owns second place as we hit the half-way point of the 2010 Arctic winter games in Grande Prairie.
We have 45 medals total, 25 of which came yesterday. Big local winners on the day came in wrestling mostly.  High Level's Codi Paul earned gold on the mat, while Natsha Derkson of High Level, and Tanner Bartlett and Bryan Noble of Rainbow Lake won silvers.

BRIER CURLING

Grande Prairie's Kevin Koe is now 5-2 in Halifax at the Tim Horton's Brier.  Koe, who fell 13-8 in a shocker to winless Nova Scotia, was able to regain some ground by beating a strong team in Manitoba 7-2.  Koe takes on Quebec next.  Ontario's Glenn Howard still leads the way at 7 and 0.

NBA BASKETBALL

The Toronto Raptors mostly outplayed the defending champion Lakers in LA last night, but Kobe Bryant nailed a fade-away with 1 second left to steal a 109-107 win.

FOOTBALL

In the CFL, B.C released quarterback Buck Pierce yesterday, leaving Jarious Jackson and Casey Printers to battle for the job.  In the NFL, Kansas City has signed former Jets running back Thomas Jones. While the Browns have cut QB Derek Anderson.
