Wolverines Champs! (03/22/12)

For the fourth straight Northwest Junior Hockey League season, the Whitecourt Wolverines are the ones to hoist the Senators Cup.  Wolverines dumping the North Peace Navigators 5-1 Thursday night to complete a four game sweep in the finals.

Wolverines scoring three unanswered goals in the first period to end the suspense early.  Another goal in the second would extend the lead to 4-0, before the Navs finally got on the scoreboard in the third.

Unlike past years, where the Wolverines were both regular season and playoff champs, this year they were only a third-ranked squad in the regular season.  Come playoffs, though, they were unstoppable in winning all eleven games they played, including series sweeps against second place Grande Prairie and first place North Peace.

For the Navigators, this was no doubt a tough defeat to stomach.  They had cruised through the regular season with an impressive 33-3 record, including a 5-1 mark against Whitecourt.

The turning point in the finals, however, came right in game one.  Navs looked to have the win in the bag, as they led 5-2 after forty minutes.  However, the Wolverines scored four unanswered in the third to win 6-5.
